Needless to say, my prayers have been answered. It just blew me away to actually know who my dad's biological father really was. It's just nice to know your true roots. I have tons of information on my mother's side of the family, so just to know more about my dad's life and his family really makes my day. I would not have all of this information if it wasn't for the both of you and Debbie helping me. Thanks so much from the bottom of my heart for all of your input and time. I still am going to get with you Ardith and come down your way. And Craig, it's so nice to know the info you passed along. How did you find out about Ross and Mildred dating and having a son? That is just unreal. Thanks again and I will be in touch.
I was sent this and thought tho you have info on yr Grandmothers's side, perhaps something here is new. I am guessing DC and Arelia were Mildred's folks?
Mildred and her family are found in 1910 Fulton Co., IL (Lewistown).
48 year old D C Ellsworth was born in New York. He was a stone mason. Both is parents were born in New York.
His wife, Arelia, was 43 years old and born in Illinois. This leads me to believe that they met and married in Illinois. They had been married 25 years, she having given birth 6 times, with 6 children living. Lucky you, all children were still in the household in 1910.
Robert G was 23 years old in 1910. He was born in Kansas and was employed as a coal miner. Twenty year old Harry was also born in Kansas, and was employed as a coal miner. Brother Winfield (I think) was 16 and born in Illinois, as was 14 year old Alfred, 9 year old Midlred, and 4 year old Marian. Winfield was shown as a farmer on the home farm.
Robert George Ellsworth registered for the draft June 5, 1917 in Fulton Co. IL, He was born Jan 2, 1888 in Strong City Kansas. His employment at that time was a Coreburner for Bettendorf Car Shops out of Bettendorf, Iowa. He was single at the time, but mentions one sister, possibly under the age of 12.
His description was medium height and build with blue eyes and dark hair. He appeared to have signed his own name.
Winfield Scott Ellsworth also registered for the draft on the same day as his brother. He gave his employment as the same as his brother's with Battendorf Car Co as his employer. He stated that he partly helped support his mother and sister which would suggest that D C had passed away by then. He was described as medium height and slinder with light brown hair and blue eyes. He also signed his own name.
Finding the family in 1900 Lewistown, DC is shown as David C Ellsworth. His wife's name was spelled Aurelia M. David was shown born April 1849, Aurelia was born August 1868. In that census, she had given birth 6 times, with only 4 children living. Robert, Harry and Winfield were in the household. Alfred appears to be William born July 1896. David was a stonecutter.
It appears that Winfield was named after another relative:

Yes it's nice to know more about Mildred's background. Did the info you found have Mildred's mothers maiden name. In the obit Debbie found, it stated her mother as Rita (Smith) Ellsworth, but she could have gone by Rita since it may have been a nickname for Aurelia. Thanks again, and keep it coming. I have contacted my siblings and they too are excited at what you have found. I am going to lay all of this information out at some point and get it to them. In the mean time, they are looking at our postings. Take care, keep in touch, and stay cool. They say we have a heat wave on the way!
I came across more info of DC Ellsworth , his children and tho only one shows their children but goes way back. Kinda of interesting if you could find any kin from Harry Ellsworth's side. Way too long to post so am sending it snail to you and also to Wilma Ellsworth. Maybe time can fill in the missing parts.
By the way, since I was not 100% certain Ross married and divorced Lucy Hopping, did anyone find any information about that? And, since I am missing Ross's wife Myrtle's last name, has anyone run into that? I still have quite a few little holes to fill. I imagine I will be posting a few more questions very soon. :) Thank you very much! Craig
I was just going thru a search on Southwood and it brought me here so I had to read it all thru again..........lol so now wondering if you made progress on any new family thru these revelations. I hope so, life is short. Ardith
Hello Ardith, How in the world are you doing these days? My hopes to come to see you have just not come to fruition as expected. Life keeps on changing and it seems like the older I get the more happens. My work continues to be extremely busy and time consuming, but that is a good thing in today's economy. Though nothing is certain, so I keep plugging away and hoping for the best. Unfortunately, I have gone no further with my family search. I was so exalted at finally verifying who my father's father was, that everything was put on hold. It was one of those things that you just want to know about your roots when an illegitimate child is involved. My father never spoke of much because I am sure he may have been looked down upon. I can never thank you enough for all the help you were and for the research you put together for me. I am indebted to you always. Mark my words, we will meet before this is done! Thanks again! Vicki
Hi there, glad to know you are doing ok . Yes seems we all are busy, and time is just going faster and faster............In some of my Southwood stuff, I came across a Judy Demoss connection in my familyl and could not remember if tied into you or who.........lol too much on the brain. Again, no thanks needed........ever!! It always pays back to help another. I recently met for the first time a cousin from Canada, who I found a few months back, and had looked for quite a few years. Alot of help along the way, but the finishing touch was Facebook. Who would of thought. Anyway, I am sure my zest to help others helps me find my way much easier......Thank you Lord.............. Keep in touch!! Ardith
