DRUMMOND Family of Fulton Co.

Am researching my wife's GGgrandparents.  James and Butler DRUMMOND served in the Civil War.  Can't find anything in the censuses to validate the family.

Hello-  I searched the census 1850-1880 Fulton County Illinois using soundex and this is what i found.  Also the Illinois marriage records and the Civil War Unit  Butler served in.  John is mentioned as an assessor in Harris township in 1860 in Fulton County History by Chapman written in 1879.  I hope this helps,  Good luck in your research.  Sincerely Karen Morlan

Karen,

I'm overwhelmed.  It'll take awhile to absorb all you've given here.  Thank you very much

Jim-you are very welcome.

I have worked on my family history in Fulton County for manyl years, So many families in Fulton County are related to each other by marriage it's just a matter of time and a new relative pops up.

I belong to Ancestry.com and get my census information through them.  I have learned to search soundex as well as search by first names in a given county with a given township.  It helps to cut the possibilities down.  This will give you enough information to search more.

I also use http://www.illinoisancestors.org/fulton/ as a valuable facts and information tool.  The gal who runs it is very helpful.

This is a good civil war research site.  You can look up the person as well as their unit and where they served and fought. http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/

Lastly I love to order civil war service records as well as pension records if they are avaiable.  The web sight is a bit tough to navigate through but worth the $17.00 or $34.00 to order files.  They can be ordered online and I usually get them in the mail in less than 3 weeks.https://eservices.archives.gov/orderonline/start.swe?SWECmd=Start

Fulton County has a good selection of genealogy records in the Library and if you are ever in the area be sure to search there.

Good Luck,  Let me know if I can help again.  Many good people helped me when I first started,  I like to return the favor whenever possible!

Sincerely  Karen Jennings Morlan

My Grandfather James Jennings was born in Liverpool in the 1850's, Fulton County and married a Fulton County Girl Sadie Havens.

Karen,

Thanks again.  One thing that confused me was that the www.itd.nps.gov/cwss listing had a Butler and a John Drummond in the 28th Illinois Infantry Company K whereas the Illinois Archives had a Butler and a JAMES Drummond in the 28th Co K. from Marietta, Fulton County.  Maybe you know what's wrong in my procedure here?

This would be what I would work from.  Sometimes county lines would change too.  I think it will be a good idea to send for the Civil War Service records if you can.  Maybe it will help figure things out.  I apologize for sending so much information but that’s how I work through my research problems – print it all out and look at it over a cup of coffee!  If it doesn't come together now, sometime later it will when you know more.

My best bet is that both of these men are your fellows.  Chapmans History of Fulton County 1879 lists the 28th infantry and it’s companies only to Company I.

Name: Butler Drummond ,

Residence: Marietta, Illinois

Enlistment Date: 22 March 1865

Distinguished Service: DISTINGUISHED SERVICE

Side Served: Union

State Served: Illinois

Unit Numbers: 351 351

Service Record: Enlisted as a Private on 22 March 1865

Enlisted in Company K, 28th Infantry Regiment Illinois on 22 March 1865.

Mustered out Company K, 28th Infantry Regiment Illinois on 15 March 1866 in Brownsville, TX

Rootsweb town search has a Marietta, in Fulton County Illinois

From what I have seen men came from far and wide to a muster area to join up.  Many of my Fulton County People went to Peoria to join.

I find this on John- by RJ Leighty on ancestry.com

Jim,

Here's another angle on your Drummond to consider for future research.

Gavin Drummond fought in the RW in Monmouth County, NJ. His daughter married
Langstraat and they had many children. I am related to Gavin through marriage. .

What I have learned through my research is that many of my 60 FC families began
life in the colonies having migrated from Europe. Many are Dutch. Most moved from
NYC, Rensselaerwyck, New Netherland and other places to NJ sometime before the turn
of the 18th century. After the RW, they seemed to want to join the great western migration
where they removed to OH or IN and stayed a few years. Others removed to KY or TN
before they pushed on into IL, KS or OK.

John Drummond, who died in the Civil War, was my 2nd ggfather. I have the very interesting pension papers filed by his widow, Eliza. Evidently, she gave birth to a child born in 1868 and there was a dispute concerning the children.

I find a James and Butler Drummond listed in the
1880 United States Federal Census > Illinois > Fulton > Harris > District 44  This from Ancestry.com
Also listed is Butler's wife Martha and children James, Charles Nancy and Frank.  I hope this helps.  Butler is listed as being from Indiana and Martha from Ohio.
Good Luck in your search.  If you need more clarification please let me know.    Karen
