Are you connected to the family of David and Mary Ann (Dennis) Hughes who migrated to Fulton County from Trenton, New Jersey?

Hi - Just joining in the forum, but for a few years now I have been researching the families of John and Rachel TRAPP. who moved to Isabel Twp., Fulton Co. by 1860 (1860 Census) from Knox Co. Ohio, where they had spent a few years (1850 Census). They had come from Tomkins Co., NY.

John's family were of English origin, and, as far as I can determine, descendents of Thomas TRAPP, who sailed into Martha's Vineyard about 1659. Over the next few generations, our branches moved from that island to Connecticut and then to central and western NY. John (born c.1808, NY) like many in his family was a cooper, or barrel maker.

Rachel (last name unk.,born c. 1812) had been born in Canada, apparently, although one census does say NY. They had several children: Cordelia (1831), Oliver C.(c.1833), William (c.1835), Mary (c.1865), Erastus (c.1837), John Jr. (c.1840), Levi (c.1844), and Charles S. TRAPP (c.1855). All were born in NY, except for the youngest, Charles, who was born in OH.

Oliver, my GGGrandfather, (born c.1833, NY), married Maria (aka Mariah) GILSON (b. abt 1838, NY) on 18 AUG 1855 in Fullton Co. IL.. They had 4 Children: Fayette (c. 1856), William M 'Will' (Dec. 1859), Henry (May 1861) , and Olive Comstock (May 1863). Oliver probably never saw his baby daughter, as he enlisted in the Twenty-Eighth Regiment, Illinois volunteer Infantry, "... for services in the Union Army", in 1861. He served 3 yrs & his death which was a result of his military service, happened near Nashville, TN, as per military records. He was buried in a Union Cemetery outside Nashville.

Maria remarried (12 March 1865), a John H. BABCOCK, (est. birth 1834), from OH, and the marriage lasted long enough to produce two children: Emily "Emma"(April 1865) and Edward S. BABCOCK (April 1869), but by the 1870 CENSUS, Mr. BABCOCK was not in the household. By the 1880 Census, Maria had resumed her former name of TRAPP, although the two children retained the surname BABCOCK.

By the 1880 Census,my GGrandfather, William M. TRAPP, was still living at home in Pleasant w/ his (remarried & divorced/annulled/other ) mother, his younger brother Henry & sister Olive, plus his two young 1/2-sibs, Emily & Eddie BABCOCK. He and Henry worked as a farm laborers, while Olive worked as an apprentice seamstress. Fayette was no longer in the home, and I have not found any clues to his subsequent history.

In 10 SEP 1885 Will married Nancy MATHESON or MATHEWSON (spelling unclear), apparently in Fulton County still, IF the only plausible record I have found is actually his:
•TRAPP, WILLIAM MATHEWSON, MAMIE 09/10/1885 FULTON Co.
The date and place are consistent with known parameters, but ....the given name "Mamie" doesn't appear anywhere else in the history or records that Ive found.

By the 1900 Census, Will had moved from Pleasant to Ipava township, become a farmer,, owned the Ipava home he was living in with wife of 14 years, Nancy A., their 2 sons: Fay, 13, & Harry, a baby less than 1 month old. Nancy was born in Aug. 1852, in IL. Her father was born in VA & her mother in IN . She and Will had also had two daughters (Laura and Blanch), but they didn't survive infancy. Fay TRAPP, my Grandfather, was in school. In 1901 a third daughter, Jennie Marie was born. There are some shadowy references to another daughter, Fanny, born in IL, but I can't find enough information to clarify that.

At some point before Feb. 1904, Will, Nancy and the three surviving children moved out of Fulton County IL to Vernon Co. Missouri as their two youngest daughters Leona Edith (16 FEB 1904) and Clara Olive (1 DEC 1905) were born there. They never moved back to Illinois.

Various others of the names mentioned here, however, continued to live in Fulton County,or nearby, married and raised families there. Some of them I have been able to follow, mostly through census or other records available on the internet, and some I lost the tracks of. What I have I am happy to share. Most of the Trapp families that I have come across in IL or OH trace back to ancestors from various German states, and are not directly related.

There are alot of Irish that settled in fulton County in the 1800's...my family (Neville and McMahan were from county Limerick, Ireland). It is my understanding that the family was attracked to the area by land grants (this was around 1835) and since they were farmers in ireland, it was a natural progression.  My family, along with many other Irish, originally landed on the east coast and stayed until enough money could be obtained to travel west.  They usually went west in groups (families and other friends).  After the initial group got settled, they sent for other extended family and friends from Ireland.  There are actually quite a few buried in St. Augustine's cemetary-which i think the church was moved over the line to Knox county later.  On the Knox county website there is a name listing for the cemetary associated with the church.  It is so interesting to see how many Irish were buried there.  My original immigrant ancestors, Johanna and Patrick Neville are buried there (1844 and 1853)

My name is Berneita Ann (Beaird) Ellis and my parents were Harry Leslie and Maude Leona Beaird. My grandfather was John Franklin Edward Swise of Cuba,il. My grand mother was Bessie Mae Demoss Swise.I am looking for a sister by the first name of Shirley. Do not know her last name. I would love to hear from any relative.

I am very excited about finding this site and looking forward to the magic of new discoveries.  I have been researching the ancestery of my Grandfather, Andrew Snowden White who spent the majority of his life in Fulton County.  I was born and raised in Bushnell but left 46 years ago and recently returned to my roots.  Researching from the West Coast, where I spent the last 20+ years made a lot of the research difficult.  I am looking foward to the easy access and ready availablity of the Fulton County Genealogy forum.  I have what I believe is reasonably accurate data (dates, places, births and deaths) on 5 generations. With the access to Fulton County info I hope to confirm the data I have and find new detail on how they lived their lives. 

We started in New Jersey with Samuel, James Stewart, came through Ohio with , Samuel Dexter to Fulton Co and Job S. to Andrew.

If anyone has information on any of these people and their lives in Fulton County I would very much appreciate hearing about it.

I am researching my family names: Brown, Clark, Weese, Clannin, McBride, Elam, and Kinnamon. The Browns seem to be the hardest with my gr.gr.grandfather William Brown coming over from England. Otherwise I have some info on the rest of the surnames if anyone is looking for same . I grew up in Lewistown and know alot of  people tho i now live in Logan County Illinois. I'm happy to help anyone if I can!

My mother, Beulah L Daily/Dailey, was born in 1907 in St David, Fulton Co, IL and also lived in Canton.  She came out west with her parents, brother and sister when in her late teens.  Her parents and grandparents were all born or lived in Fulton Co, IL starting about 1850. I visited the area a couple of years ago for a family reunion.  I would love to exchange information.

I am trying to trace part of my family that came through Fulton County in the mid- to late-1800s.  My great grand father, Frank Hopkins appears to have been born in Fulton County, IL in May 1860.  He met my great grandmother, Addie Mae Spear, of Fulton or McDonough County, IL.  Addie Mae was a daughter of Samuel Spear and Lamira Hays.  After the Civil War, Samuel was the town marshal for a while in Vermont, IL.  He later relocated to Clinton, MO.  Frank Hopkins and Addie Mae Spear were married in Fulton County in 1885 and later moved to Kansas City, MO.  I have images of their head stone on FindaGrave.com.

In 1921 Addie Mae Spear passed away and in 1926 Frank Hopkins passed away.  The informant on the death certificate for Frank was a neighbor and did not have data on where Frank was born (other than IL) or what his parents names were.  Using resources like marriage licenses and census records, I was able to place Frank in Fulton County from his birth in 1860 to at least 1885.  Census records suggest a Frank Hopkins was living in or near Pleasant, IL in 1880 with his parents, Warren and Elisabeth (sic) Hopkins.  Two siblings were also noted, a George Hopkins (born in about 1863) and Lennel Hopkins (born in 1876).  Lennel Hopkins is believed to actually be Lumuel Hopkins, who later relocated to western Nebraska.  I have no further information on George Hopkins.

An 1871 land map of the area shows a Warren Hopkins owned a parcel north east of Vermont, IL.  I have seen some undocumented references that he may be buried in or near Ipava, IL.   However, I had a death records search done with the County Clerk in Fulton County with no death certificate found.

Does anyone know if any of the cemetaries around Ipava have been mapped by any persons or churches?  Also, if anyone has any records or evidence that may help identify Warren Hopkins, Elizabeth Barnes, or George Hopkins, I would really appreciate hearing from you.  I have a ton of old photos I inherited a couple of years ago with no names, dates or locations.  Many are from the 1800s.  I suspect some may be from this area.

Any help you can suggest would be welcome.
