I am looking for any information on the family of "DeWitt". My Great Grandmother is burried in a Lewistown cemetery. Is there more than one in town? Here is some information on her....
Alice Serina DeWitt (daughter of Barney DeWitt and Matilda Stout) was born March 03, 1869 in Fulton County, Illinois, and died September 07, 1956 in Britt, Iowa. She married Alva Arnett on March 19, 1891 in Canton, Illinois, son of James H. Arnett and Elizabeth Yunt.
More About Alice Serina DeWitt: Burial: September 10, 1956, Lewistown, Illinois.
Her obit said she was burried in a family plot. What I would like to know is the plot a "DeWitt" or "Arnett" plot, and what cemetery is she burried in.
Any help in this matter would be a great help for my family history.
Your grandmother is likely buried in Oak Hill cemetery. We were there last spring; there is no list of who is buried there let alone a map or guide. I grew up next door and know where many of the older graves are, but not the more recent ones. I recall a Dewitt stone, and know about where it is, but that is some time ago. I may have a picture; I will check the files.
The pictures we took last April are no help. We have others from previous visits; since neither fo us ever throws anything away they must be here somewhere. For the same reason it may take quite some time to find them.
I have the Fulton county Historical and Genealogical Society cemetery transcriptions for Oak Hill Cemetery in Lewistown, which also includes other cemeteries in Lewistown twp. I looked for your Arnetts in all cemeteries, none listed by those first names. Sorry.
Chances are if Alice DeWitt is buried in Lewistown then the Henry memorial most likely did the service. I will email them on Monday as leaving in a few hrs for Indy. They usually get back to me in a few days. Otherwise I do have somewhere the name and number of the cemetary caretaker and he should have records.
The name Matilda Stout sounded familiar so I looked up in my Clark family line. I have a Matilda Stout , who was probably born around 1805 qnd 1813. Her mother was Sarah Royal married to Anthony Stout. Sr. She came into my line by marrying 2nd husband Isaac Clark Sr. in 1821 in Ohio. Actually as I read on it says Matilda Stout married a James Parish and raised a family in Athens Il. So apparently not yr matilda.
I thought I would add this to the story, Alice died in Britt Iowa and was shipped to Lewistown, IL in 1956 or 1954 to be buried in the family plot. Not sure if that would be helpfull?
According to the funeral home records, Alice DeWitt Arnett died 9/7/56 in Iowa and was buried in Apple Cemetary. her service was held at Mt. Pleasant Church.
I could not enlarge yr obit enough to read but hope this info helps you. Are you familiar with Apple Cem? I also have family there.
Thank you so much for the link to the apple cemetery. That is exacly what I was searching for. Now I can go visit the cemetery and see who has a headstone. Most of my relatives could not afford one. My dads mother was an Arnett, and her mother was Alice S. Arnett.
Once again thanks to everyone who helped me with this search.
Kay, I am coming to Lewistown soon to see where my relatives lived and hopefully to further my genealogy research. One of my interests were Oak Hill Cemetery as my Gr Gr and Gr grandfathers are buried there. Would you know where they would be buried with the cemetery transcripts? Are there maps of Oak Hill? The names of interest are NEIL, LATHBURY, BACCUS and SOUTHWOOD. I am relatively new to genealogy and these forums. Any help would sure be appreciated. Thank you, Laurie
I know it has been awhile since you posted, and apparently I missed it, but wondering how the Southwoods come into your line. I just recently realized how my family is connected to the Southwoods, don't know much, but my gr aunt Mary Brown had a child, Dorothy Southwood, who had a son Dick Southwood who resides in Pekin. Just wondered if any connection. Ardith
