FOSTER, MAXWELL, GROVE, HAFFNER, BRICKER

I am descended of Amos D. FOSTER/Cerena Viola (GROVE) FOSTER and Samuel MAXWELL/Sarah (BRICKER) MAXWELL of Astoria, and am looking for information on their parents.  Their children (Albert A. MAXWELL and Sarah (FOSTER) MAXWELL) were my great grandparents, born around 1887 and 1892, respectively.

I believe Samuel MAXWELL'S father was James H. MAXWELL of Pleasant Twp., and his mother was Mary (LITTLE) MAXWELL, and would like to confirm.

Amos Foster married Cerena Viola GROVE.  Her parents were John W. GROVE and Sarah Margaret (HAFFNER) GROVE.  I do not have any information on Amos FOSTER's parents.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

John W. Grove was born near New Maket, Va., December 5, 1832 and died at his home in Astoria, IL May 28, 1907, aged 74 years, 5 months and 23 days.
He came to Illinois when a young man 22 years old. Jan. 1857, he and Miss Sarah Haffner were united in marriage, and celebrated their golden wedding last New Years day. They were given eleven children, one of whom, Melcina May, died in childhood, Charles of Montana; Mrs. Emma Foster, Mrs. Ola Foster, Henry and Orville, living on farms near Astoria; Edward B., Mrs. Belle Falkenstein and Mrs. Minnie Argo living in Astoria; Mrs. Ethel Shields of Canton, IL; and Mrs. Maggie Horton of Glenwood, IL.
These ten children unite today in mourning the loss of a kind, indulgent father and in comforting a very worthy mother in her sad loss of a true and faithful husband.
Mr. Grove responded to his country's call in the time of peril, enlisted in the union army Co. F. Reg. 103 of the U. S. volunteers in which relation he served three years.
By wise management and the assistance of a faithful companion he was enabled to provide well for the comfort of his family.
Though always a friend and supporter of the church, yet he never became personally ifentified with it until Feb. 14, 1906, when he united with the U. B. church at this place.
Uncle John Grove was a familiar figure on our streets, and will be missed by a large circle of griends. During his long protected illness he often expressed his preference to go and be at rest, but without a word of complaint be patiently bore his affliction with christian resignation; and when no one was expecting it, peacefully passed away to the land of endless joy.
Funeral services will be conducted at the U. B. church today (Thursday) at 10:30 a.m. by his pastor Rev. D. E. Baer.
The burial ceremony will be in charge of the local G. A. R. Post,
of which the deceased was a faithful member. The ladies of the Relief Corps will also attend in a body.  He was married to Sarah Margaret HAFFNER on January 1, 1857 in Fulton Co, IL.

15.  Sarah Margaret HAFFNER was born on June 30, 1837 in Staunton, VA.  She died on May 19, 1926 in Astoria, Fulton Co, IL.  Again God has used the last enemy (which is death) to put one of His saints to sleep and the church militant has lost a noble soldier because of her promotion to the church triumphant. But we mourn not as those who have no hope; for truly a noble soul has gone back to the God who gave it; there to be crowned and receive her reward for the deeds done in the body. If a good character resulting in good words will merit the Divine approval, surely this good woman will hear the Master say: "Well done, thou good and faithful servant, enter thou into the joys of thy Lord."
Sarah Grove, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Haffner, was born in Virginia June 30, 1837 and departed this life at her home in Astoria, IL, May 19, 1926, aged 88 years, 10 months and 19 days. In the year of 1854 she came with her parents and their family to a farm near Astoria, IL, and she has resided in and near the town of Astoria all these years except a few years on the prairie near New Philadelphia, IL.
Jan. 1 1857, she was united in marriage to John W. Grove, under the shadow of whose strong and noble manhood she found a true refuge and shared with him the joys and vicissitudes of more than 50 years of married life, when in 1907 he was called in death. To this union were born eleven children, all except one growing to manhood and womanhood and that one was Melcina May, who died when but a child. The other ten children are: Mrs. John Foster of Vermont, IL, Mrs. Amos Foster, Mrs. Ed Falkenstein, Mrs. Dan Horton and J. Henry Grove of Astoria, E. B. Grove of Wetumka, Oklahoma, Mrs. Marion Shields of Absarokee, Montana, Mrs. Sherman Argo of Pueblo, Colorado, Orville Grove of Canton, IL and C. J. Grove, deceased.
When but a girl in her teen age she was converted and united with the U. B. church in Astoria of which she was one of its honored and respected members when the Master called. Giving to her Master more than 70 years of faithful service. She was liberal in her support of the work in the church. For some years she has been unable to attend the services regular but never failed to support the church regularly. She was greatly interested in missionary work. She was not only a member of the local W. M. A. but a life member of the Woman's Missionary Association and while not able to attend the meetings she delighted in having the women to meet at her home which they often did for her benefit. She was a woman with great faith and a mighty power in prayer. Surely she rests from her labors but her work will follow her. She was indeed a wonderful mother, ever mindful of the needs of her children and especially never forgetting to pray for their spiritual welfare. Her door was open in hospitality to everyone, especially to her pastor and the church, and prayer or religious worship was never out of place in her home.
She leaves to mourn her departure the above named children, 39 grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
All that loving hands could do, was done by her faithful children to relieve her suffering and to stay the hand of death, but the Lord had appointed her bounds that she could not pass. He called and at 11:35 o'clock Wednesday morning she answered and went home to join the many loved ones and friends on the other side.
Funeral services were held at the U. B. church Friday at 2:30 p.m., conducted by the pastor, Rev. W. R. Seitzinger and interment in the Astoria cemetery. The Woman's Missionary Association of which she was a member attended in a body, marching from the home to the church.

For six years after his death she lived with her sons, Jeremiah and William. The remaining nineteen years of her life was spent with her daughter, Mrs. John Grove and family.
Mrs. Haffner united with the German Reformed church at the age of seventeen and was a faithful christian through life. Her husband was also a member of this church, so hand in hand they led a devoted christian life. Mary Little was the seventh wife of Jacob H. Maxwell. He was born in 1817. He had four children by his second wife viz Sarah, Alexander, Hattie and Esther. Whether or not he had other children is unknown as this information was gleaned from the Biographies in the 1908 Fulton County History book. If there is a relationship between your Samuel and Jacob, I feel it would be through his son.

Since first posting this, I've learned that Mary Little was not married to one of my direct ancestors.  It was a different Maxwell in Pleasant Twp.

Thank you for your reply, though.

Sorry it's taken so long to respond.  I don't check the site as often as I should.

I am indeed Betty Sites's grandson, the son of her daughter Sara Margaret (Sally)  (1943-2005).

I don't have any more information than what is listed on this site, going backwards that is.  I don't know how much you know from Albert (Bert) on down.  Is that what you're looking for?

I've seen that James Maxwell was born in Bartel Co., VA.  I've never been able to find a Bartel Co. Virginia or West Virginia, or anything that was once called Bartel County.  Can you shed any light on that?
