Canton (city) Cemetery

Hello to the Forum,

Can anyone tell me if the Canton (city) cemetery is indexed?  I am hoping to located the grave of Joseph Thomas Hollandsworth, who apparently died in Canton on April 09, 1902.

Thank you,

JWM

I believe yoa are referring to Greenwood Cemetery. It is a very old cemetery started a round 1826.  Some of the record are incomplete but in Cemetery Inscriptions of Fulton County, Canton Township, Greenwood Cemetery, Canton, Illinois Volume 15 (1826 to December 31, 1920 ( long title :) I found I found a Hollandsworth, Joseph (T? or F?) (d.c.) Born Va. d. Apr.9, 1902 Canton, IL. bur.d Apr.11,1902 = 68 y 7m 4 d Res. IL. 33 yr's.  lot. S 1/2 460 Div A.

Also on the same lot or in that area are Letha M. Hollansworth bur.d. Sept.10, 1900 - 3 yr's; Margaret A. Hollandsworth, b. VA., d. Oct 24, 1908, Bur.d. Oct. 26, 1908 - 75 Y 3M 23 d; and Nellie Hollandsworth bur d. Sept. 28, 1897 age 16 mo's.

I just happen to own that book so I hope that helps. I understand the frustration of not being able to find information that you know is there.

Hello Ruth,

Thank you for your reply.

With the fall weather being as nice as it has been , we made a run over to Canton the other day and stopped at their library and then the Greenwood Cemetery.  The library's genealogy dept. is very inpressive and we were able to find the information on the graves there also.  We then went to the cemetery and as you say , it is large and also beautiful and well cared for.  There was no one in the office at the time and so we were unable to locate the graves that we inquired about.  We will try again later.

Thank you again for your reply and interest,

John

Hi John,

Glad you were able to make it to Canton but sorry you were unable to find the graves. If you need more help why don't you email me directly ruthcultontaylor@hotmail.com .  Although I haven't lived there for 40+ years, I still have ties in Canton so if I can't answer maybe I can find someone who can.

Look forward to hearing from you,

Ruth Culton Taylor

If you haven't already done so just FYI.  The people at the library have the home phone number for the gentleman that can help you locate the graves.  We had to call him and then set up a time to go to the office and meet him.  After he showed us on the map and in what general location it was in we headed out and in about 15 minutes he came out and joined us in the search.  He was very helpful as is the library in Canton.  : )

Hello HOFMOM,

Thank you for the reply.  The information is exactly what I had hope to learn.  We'll give the library a call and go from there.

Thanks again,

JWM
