Hi - I am curious in finding out any information on my paternal grandfather's family.
My grandfather's name was Orville Kenneth Van Liew b.2-9-1903, he had a brother named Lawrence P. b.8-29-1898 and a sister named Irma Mae b. 3-22-1900. Their parents were named John Young Van Liew and Jeanette (Poole).
Lawrence P. Van Liew married Irene M. Harmon - they had one child Donna Dene b.5-15-1915
Irma Mae married James Victor Hamilton on 4-5-1931, I know she had 2 step-sons
Orville Van Liew married Phyllis Feeser on 12-24-1929 and they had one child (my father) Olin Kent b.10-12-1935. My grandparents lived in Canton for many years before finally settling in Lombard, IL. My father, Olin Kent, passed away in July 1973.
Growing up I never met or knew any of my grandfather's siblings and/or their children or grandchildren. I would love to find out if there are any descendants.
I've lived in Texas for over 20 years after first moving to California from Canton but still know a little about Canton. I think you will find those you seek in the household of John J (aka J.Y & John Y) in the 1900, 1910 & 1920 censuses. By 1920 they are living in town close to people who were of the same generation as my parents (that's why the name struck a bell) Heritage Quest, an online geneology service accessed though libraries is a good place to start if you haven't obtained the information already.
Hi Pitch - I just looked up Warren in a book I have on the Van Liew family. Looks like he is possibly in there.
I have a Warren Merrill b. 6-12-1931. It doesn't seem he is related to my grandfather's siblings directly, however he is a part of the SAME Van Liew family (if this is the same man)!
Is your husband still in contact with this man? Please feel free to pass on the information and I will also include my e-mail address. Thank you for this information.
Van Liew is a Dutch name. If my memory serves me correctly this family can be found in or near New Netherland in the mid 1600s, or perhaps earlier I believe they are closely related to Van Cleef - but I may have my families confused as I have an ancestor with a name that is similarly spelled. .
Chances are they migrated to New Jersey sometime around the turn of the century due to over crowding on the Island. If they did, they probably either settled in Monmouth or Bergan counties s they had the largest Dutch communities. Monmouth was quickly settled by the Puritan English and it was ruled by English law whereas Bergan was not. Therefore it had a larger Dutch community; the same is true today.
Fulton County has a stong Dutch history replete with a Reformed Church built ca 1835. Many of these families settled in or very near Fairview. Several of the Dutch cousins that I am related to by marriage migrated from Holland through NY, NJ, PA, and OH to settled in Fulton County just as my ancestors did.
My husband is related to the Van Liew family on the Pool side. Jeanette Pool is my husband's First Cousin 2x removed. Jeanette & John were married 06/20/1892. John died 12/19/1920 and Jeanette died 03/23/1939. Unfortunately I don't have much other information to help you.
