Cuba

Was there a town named Cuba in Fulton County in about 1845? I believe that my great grandfather was the sheriff there in 1848. Is there any way that I can get a confirmation of this? His name was William Black and he married Margaret Ruth Banks in February of 1847. Does Cuba still exist?

Morley - Yes, there was and still is a town named Cuba in Fulton Co, IL.  My g-grandfather was born there in 1838.  I'm not familiar with your ancestors names but surely someone here will be..

Here is a brief bit about the beginning of Cuba, Illinois. According to the 1879 history of Fulton county, in 1834 the town Middletown was laid out by Ephraim Brown. Two years later in 1836, another near by town was laid out named Centerville. The two towns eventually merged and were renamed Cuba, Illinois. The book does not give the date of the merge.

My g-gma Florence Baker was born in Cuba in 1901. Her mother was Sarah Berry, daughter of Eliza gibbons and Willis Berry. William Baker was the father of Florence. I know that Sarah and William married in 1899 and had my g-gma and one other child according to the census of 1900, it lists them as married with one child but none living. We do not know what happened to William Baker, but in 1910 census My gg-gma Sarah Berry was married to William Jarnagan with the rest of the family. I am trying to find out what happened to Florence's dad William Baker. If you can please help and thank you for it .

Morley,

The book is titled "History of Fulton County, Illinois 1879", it was printed that year in Peoria, Illinois by Chas. C. Chapman & Co. and reprinted later by Unigraphic Inc, out of  Evansville, IN.

No specific authors are named on the book. I imagine it was a group effort with its 1090 pages.
