Just had an idea, I checked the Illinois State Archives database for court cases in Fulton County. There is a suit against James Stoke from Ann Stoke. You can get this file from Western Illinois University. Case Number 3461 November 1865. This may explain why James is not listed in 1870 on the census. It would be worth checking it out. Hope this helps also. Deb

David, I also looked up the obit for Jane Brown. It is quite interesting as it states she is the last of a family of 12 children, her mother one of 16. Here it is:
REF: Canton Daily Ledger, Saturday Sept. 2, 1933 Pg-1 DEATH TAKES OLD CANTON RESIDENT Canton lost one of its oldest residents yesterday afternoon with the death at 1 o'clock of Mrs. Jane Brown, 94 who died at her home 656 East Elm St., where she had lived for the past 60 years. Death was attributed to complications arising from old age. She was ill two weeks. The last of a family of 12 children, Mrs. Brown also out lived her husband and their 5 children. She is survived by a grandson, Harry of California, and by several nephews and a niece in Farmington. On July 22, 1880, she was among those who heard Fulton County's first pipe organ dedicated in the Congregrational Church. Mrs. Brown joined the Baptist church 60 years ago, was a member of the Dorcas class, and attended services regulary until 5 years ago. Mrs. Brown was the third of 12 children, was born March 14, 1839 in Yorkshire, England. Her mother, the youngest in a family of 16 children, was Miss Anne Elizabeth Herd, before her marriage to James Stokoe. Trip on the Canal Boat In the fall of 1852, Mr and Mrs. Stokoe, their daughter Jane and six younger brothers and sisters sailed from South Eaton, England, to New York City. Their sailing vessel made the crossing in 21 days, a record at that time. Arriving in New York in October, the family later went to Chicago and boarded a canal boat for Peoria. At Peoria, a covered wagon and horses were purchased for the laborious overland journey to Farmington, the home of Mr. Stokoes sister and brother-in-law. On June 24, 1864, in Farmington, the marriage of Jane Stokoe and James W. Brown was solemnized. In the following February the couple came to Canton. For several years Mr. Brown was employed at the P&O shop, then only a small structure covering part of one block. He died in 1874, leaving her with 5 children. Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon at the Murphy Memorial Home, with the Dr. E. A. Gilmore in charge. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. friends may call at Murphy's.

Deb 6, Thank you so much for this info. WOW, you really hit the jackpot. I had been wanting to get to the Canton library to look up what ever info I, but just didn't have the time, being an over the road trucker makes research very difficult. Thank you so much. Sincerely,David Stokoe
Deb6, please thank Mr, Johnson for me. I was able to contact the Fulton county courthouse, to ask about Ann E Stokoe marriage to William Collins, turns out this Ann was the child of John & Hannah Stokoe from McDoungh County.
The last post (I was able to contact the Fulton county courthouse, to ask about Ann E Stokoe marriage to William Collins, turns out this Ann was the child of John & Hannah Stokoe from McDoungh County) is not correct.
Anna E. Stokoe was my great grandmother and the daughter of James Stokoe Sr and Ann Hird. Her obituary, see below, ties her to Jane Brown and thus to the family we are discussing:
OBITUARY Anna Elizabeth Stokoe was born at Cornforth Mill, ten miles from Durham, England, January 15, 1841, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Paramore, in Logan, Kansas, December 23, 1928, at the age of eighty-seven years, eleven months and twenty-three days. Her life was one of service for others. The happiness and comfort of others was uppermost in her living, and her devotion to her family made her a faithful, Christian wife and mother, and a friend to all. At about the age of eighteen years she united with the Methodist church, and continued faithfully in living the Christian, life as a member of that church. Her motto was "Love thy neighbor as thyself." To know her was to love her. Her life was not all sunshine, for: she endured the hardships of pioneer life, but never did she complain. The Stokoe family moved from Eaton, England, to America, when Anna was twelve years of age, and settled at Farmington, Illinois. On November 16, 1865, she was united in marriage to William G. Collins. To this union were born three children: Charles William of Stroner, Wyoming, Minnie L. Paramore of Logan, Kansas, and Edward Arthur of Wendell, Idaho. . Mr. and Mrs. Collins began housekeeping near Farmington, Illinois, but in only few years they caught the pioneer spirit of the West and moved to Nebraska. There they lived for about ten years, and then left their home near Lincoln, to come to Kansas. They homesteaded in Rooks county where they resided until the death of Mr. Collins, May 15, 1911. The family was among the first pioneers who settled in this part of Kansas. Then, after the death of her husband, Mrs. Collins made her home with her daughter in Logan, where she was at the time-of her death. Besides a host of friends, she leaves to mourn her passing her three children, seventeen grandchildren, three great- grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. Jane Brown, of Canton, Illinois-the sole survivor of a family of twelve children.
Forgot to add, I have evidence to suggest that Anna's birth year was 1845 instead of 1841---I think when they wrote the obit they got the birthyear of her husband mixed up with hers. George
Thank you very much for the obit. I have run into so many dead ends , I really appreciate the info. Have you seen my family tree on ancestory.com? Time to update. THANKS, David Stokoe
No, I haven't seen your tree. I'll look for it soon. Also, I have some information on John Stokoe that I will post soon. Guess I'd better look at your tree first to make sure that you don't already have it.
I don't have much info on John,. I found his marriage to Jane Ann Stevens, 1863 census residing in Farmington, & cival war registration records. that's all I have on John, no record of children or where he went after his wifes death.
Out of the 12 children mentioned ,have only found 11: James, John, Jane, Richard, Ann E., Henry, Treza, Hannah, Sarah, Ambrozina, & Ambrozira. I have much info on James, Jane, Hannah, & Sarah. A little info on John, Ambrozina. Very little info on Ann, Henry, Treza & Ambrozira. Richard Apparently died in infancy. I must give much credit to others who have provied info to me
Dave, I have only 10 children; Richard is new to me. Where did you locate his name? The name I had for Ambrozira was Amazona. Now I wonder where I found that name. I'll try to get John's info posted later today. George
Someone had sent me the name Richard from their research in England father James Stokoe occupation carpenter .(Joiner) mother Ann. Ambrozira was a dedution on my part from the 1860 census (I figured it was a mispelling)

John STOKOE was born on 4 Dec 1840 in Skipton in Craven, Yorkshire, England. He lived in South Helton, Haswell, Durham, England on 31 Mar 1851. In 1860 he was a Coal Miner in Fulton Co., Illinois, and in 1870 John was a coal miner in Coal Valley, Rock Island County, Illinois. In 1880 he was a farmer in Viola, Sac Co., Iowa. In 1900 John was a carpenter in Viola, Sac Co., Iowa. He died on 27 Aug 1902 at the age of 61 in Lake View, Sac Co., Iowa, (a suicide, see obits below). He was buried in 1902 in Wall Lake, Iowa, Cemetery.
John STOKOE and Jane Ann STEVENSON were married on 24 Oct 1857 in Fulton Co., Illinois. Jane Ann STEVENSON was born on 18 Aug 1841 in England. She died on 25 Feb 1876 at the age of 34. She was buried in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Farmington, Fulton Co., Illinois.
John STOKOE and Jane Ann STEVENSON had the following children:
Robert H. STOKOE, born 1861, Illinois; married Laura W. __, abt 1888. Johanna STOKOE was born in Nov 1869 in Illinois. She died before 1880.
John STOKOE and Alice J. MORRISON were married on 19 Oct 1876 in Rock Island, Rock Island Co., Illinois. They lived in Viola, Sac Co., Iowa in 1900. I think after John died she moved back to Moline IL and lived with her parents.
Robert H. STOKOE was born in 1861 in Illinois.
Robert H. STOKOE and Laura ( b Oct. 1871, Ill) were married about 1888. They lived in Coon Valley, Sac Co., Iowa in 1900. Robert and Laura lived in Black Hawk, Mt. Vernon Co., Iowa in 1910. There is possibility that they lived in Greenup, Cumberland Co, IL in 1920.
Robert H. STOKOE and Laura W. had the following child: Lelie (Lily?) STOKOE was born in Jul 1889 in Illinois.
Stokoe, John, cemetery burial, email from Sac County, Iowa researcher 7 Aug 2003. Buried in Section 4, lot 10. No one else is buried in that lot but him. Stokoe, John, newpaper clipping re drowning, Lake View, Iowa. Lake View-September 2 On last Wednesday there was circulated through the town that a man had been drowned in the Lake. Nothing definite could be learned, however, as the supposed drowning was based on the fact that a drifting boat had been found with a man's hat in it. Later developments so strengthened the belief that on Thursday a search was instituted, which resulted in the finding of the body. Following are the circumstances associated with the case. On Wednesday a stranger came to Lakewood with a team, put his team in the barm and hired a rowboat for a couple of hours. Some little time after he had gone, an apparently empty boat was seen drifting on the lake. It was brought to shore and proved to be the one that the stranger had hired. This in itself was not remarkable, but a man's hat was tied to one of the oars with a shoestring and that, together with the fact that the man had paid for the boat before leaving, pointed strongly to suicide. The man did not return and there were many theories as to what had happened to him. On Thursday morning a call came from Carnarvon asking if a man and team of that description has been here. When an affirmative reply was given and the facts connected with his disappearance were made known, parties from Breda and Carnarvon came up and preparations were made for dragging the lake. Guided by the location of the boat when found, searchers were successful in finding the body in a comparatively short time. It proved to be that of John Stokoe, of Carnarvon. Stokoe, John, Odebolt, Iowa Chronicle death notice, Sept 4, 1902. Carroll, Iowa News-- A farmer named Stokes [sic] who lives near Lake View was drowned in the lake last Thursday. He drove to Lakewood, hitched his horse securely, then hired a boat and rowed out some distance to the lake. Later, the boat was found empty, floating on the water. The man's coat and hat were in the boat, which contained no water, so it could not possible have been upset. The next day a search was made and the body was found in the lake. .
Do you know for certain that this is the same John Stokoe? There were at least 2 other John Stokoe s living it Illinois at the time period. one was John Stokoe who passed away in Peoria IL In 1915. Another John & Ann with children also named John and Ann in 1850. I think there was another John from McDdonugh County IL. Dave
On my Ancestory.com page I scanned all the Divorce papers for Ann Stoke vs James Stoke. There is no doubt this is the correct James And Ann, Especally when you see the names of the minor children Henry (who also was had to testify in court) Treza, Hannah, Sarah, and Ambrozina, Dave
I know the John Stokoe in Iowa is correct. My grandmother had a newspaper clipping of the death, which she would not have had unless John were related to her.
The Stokoe who is a Coal Miner caused some concern because of his occupation, but the data seem to fit.
Thanks George Iwill add this to John's page soon. Other info I have on John, found recently on ancestory, which I've not had a chance to scan yet is his cival war registration, stating he was from Farmington. Also I have Ann(Herd) Stokoe s' Burial in Masonic Memoral Park, Tumwater, Washington
Apparently she moved there with her daughter Sarah . Interesting Sarah died only a couple of months after her mother passed away. Then James passes away the following month
Ambrozina Seems to have devorced George W Mallory and remarried someone named Henstrut, mentiond in a newspaper
Fulton County Ledger May 28, 1885
On Friday of last week, Mrs. Ann Stokoe was seventy-one years old. In honor of the occasion the family held a sort of reunion, greatly to the surprise of the old lady. She is at present with her son, James Stokoe. The children present were James Stokoe, Mrs. Jane Brown of Canton, Mrs. Sarah Baughman of Canton, Mrs. Amby Henstrut of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Mrs. Hanna Zook of this place. To say that they had a pleasant visit together would be drawing it mild. The only draw-back to the festivities was the extremely poor physical condition of one of the daughters, Mrs. Zook.
I do know George W. Mallory remarried and had children in Missouri. but I do not know what happened to Ambrozina, this is the last mention I have found about her
George, I do have to question his birth date, all indications show John was born 1n 1837 ie: 1841 Census, 1851 census: 1860 census: civil war registration: Jane Browns obit states states she is the 3rd child, she was born in 1839 Dave
David, I have to agree that this John Stokoe's 1840 birthdate seems suspicious, and we may have the wrong person here. The cemetery record in Iowa has the 1840 date.
Something interesting, 1860 Fulton County Marriages shows Jane Stokoe married Horace Goold. the 1860 census shows living with the stukor (Stokoe) family was an Albert Gould age 1. Don't know what to make of this. Also noted in Jane Stokoe's obit said when the Stokoe's arived in Farmington they stayed with James sister and brother-in-law, no clue who they were. Dave
