While searching the 1850 Illinois census, I noticed a very high number of Ohioans in Fulton County, being over 4000. By 1860, this number had jumped to over 5000. Why were so many Ohioans in Fulton County, Illinois? Was it religious? If so, what church? I know a huge number of Mormons from Ohio were in Illinois, but had left by 1850. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
If I remember right, Land was set aside for Veterans of the War of 1912, some came for this I know my ancester fought in that war. I have read somewhere that they came by wagontrains pulled by oxen. Many others connected to them came for new land. Large families were needed to farm, but if the family became too large, the land could not feed them.
