Name Variations: Obryant, Obriant, Obrient, O'Bryant, O'Briant and MORE!

First, let me say that this site is fantastic!!  What an opportunity for people to connect with long lost family and also figure out who, what, where and when.

I am searching for ancestors in Fulton County with the above name and also as Briant, Bryant, Brient, etc without the "O".  I've never seen a name with so many variations.   I believe Alfred was the head of the family and they were listed on the 1830 Fulton census as "Briant" with 2 males under 5, 1 male 20-29, 1 female 5-9 and 1 female 20-29.

I think the family is as follows:

Name         Family position        Approx. date of birth

Alfred        Husband                 1801
Nancy        Wife                       1807
Malinda      Daughter                1825
Thomas     Son                        1827
Pleasant    Son                         1829
Mary Ann   Daughter                1830  (I believe to be my ggg grandmother)
Perry         Son                        1834
Nancy        Daughter                1836
Sarah        Daughter                1839
Leah          Daughter                1842
Abigail        Daughter                1844
Martha       Daughter                1849

The Illinois Marriage Index shows most of the female children in the family were listed as Obriant with the exception of Malinda who was listed as Obrient, marrying John Totten.

My main concern is proving Mary Ann Obriant to be my ggg grandmother, marrying James Perry Stutes.  I have seen someone named Mary Ann Henley listed as JP Stutes' wife, but I'm fairly sure Mary Ann Obriant is my ggg grandmother according to the IL Marriage index.   Their daughter, Nancy Jane was my gg grandmother.  Nancy Jane married someone name Philip Shultz and then my gg grandfather, William M Washburn.  Their son, Daniel Sapp Washburn was my g grandfather.

These families seem to have moved to Kansas and back to Illinois at different times with Alfred ending up in OK.

Any information on Stutes, Obriant (and any variations) and Washburn would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for all the wonderful work you do to reconnect families.

Boy, you got that right on with the name variations. I found Mary Ann (Annie) Bryant married James Perry Stutes on 17 Oct 1850 in Grandview, Fulton, Illinois.  I show 5 children but none of their spouses.  It's wonderful to hear from another possible relative.  My 2nd g grandmother was Malinda who married John Franklin Totten (that's my side).  John & Malinda had a son named Alfred (my g grandfather).  You can reach me at jokoar@sbcglobal.net. I will email you what I have so far if you're interested.  And likewise, I would be interested in your information.  It may be quite some time before I can respond as we are going for a family reunion on my mom's side (my last living uncle on that side is turning 90) in Wichita.  Thanks and hope to hear from you soon.

Hi Joyce,

Received both of your messages: Totten and Obriant.  I'm sending you information on Illinois Totten marriages via e-mail.

Yes, I'll take any information on the Obriant's that you have.

Thanks,
Connie
