looking for a township from 1881: Copperas Creek

greetings from Maine!

I'm looking for  a township in Fulton Co that was listed on my gggmother's marriage register in Kankakee Co--

Her name was Annie Hutton, daughter of James and Mary (Walker) Hutton, and she listed her residence as Fulton Co, IL.  The name of the town is hard to read, but looks like: Copperas Creek, Fulton Co, IL.  The first four letters, Copp, are very clear, but the rest is sort of guesswork.

Can any of you help me out on this?  I'm trying to find out if there were any Huttons, Munsons, or Walkers in that township/area at the time of her marriage in 1881.

Thanks very much, I appreciate all help, and if anyone on this board needs some Maine research, please let me know, I'm always willling to help!

Hi Anne,

Welcome to our Fulton forum! I used to vacation in Maine every summer, what a gorgeous and fun state!

First, I added "Copperas Creek" to your topic, since that IS indeed the correct name of the place, and having it displayed in the topic will help attract replies (hope you don't mind).

If you click on "Fulton Website" on the top of our forum pages, and go to "Fulton County Home" you will enter our ILGenWeb Fulton County website, maintained by me.

I just did a search on "Copperas" on that homepage, by scrolling down one click to where it says "Search our entire ILFulton Website", typing in "Copperas", and clicking "Search". That got me nine hits, pages that contain the word "Copperas" on our website, and they DO refer to your "Copperas Creek"!

I suggest that you start by reading those occurrences of the place, to get an idea of which township Copperas Creek is in. ("Copperas Creek" is not a township itself, but some kind of town/village/settlement). Next, you could scrutinize the very detailed township maps in our online book "1871 Atlas Map of Fulton County, Illinois", the second link down on "Fulton Website" on the top of our forum pages.

By the time you read this, however, it is likely that another kind forum member more knowledgeable than I will have told you exactly where Copperas Creek is!

Happy hunting,
--Alice

Thank you, Alice, for the welcome, and for the help - at least I know now that I was reading my ggmother's wedding register somewhat correctly!

She was married 1881, as I said, and I've just found her in the 1880 Census for Banner Twp, living with her stepfather, Isaac N Munson, and mother, Mary Walker Hutton Munson.

And the mess continues, as it often does in genealogy:  this family shows in the 1870 census for Prairie Sand Twp, Tazewell Co., then, as I said in the 1880 census for Fulton Co.  Another connection just found that Mary Munson was buried in Canton, in the Greenwood Cemetery, in 1899....apparently her husband, Isaac, moved in with her daughter/his stepdaughter, Annie Hutton Whitfield, shortly after in Pekin, IL.

But where is Annie's father, James Hutton ??  (rhetorical)  She is living w/Isaac in 1870 at age 10, but gives James as her real father - so looking for Hutton, as well as Munson.

How far back do death certificates go for Fulton Co., and what is the correct way to apply for one?

Hope I'm not being a pain - I'm digging thru 32 lines, and am hooked on this one - heavily rely on people and their good genealogy natures.

And where in Maine did you used to summer?  I'm from Evanston, IL originally, raised outside of Boston, and moved here permanently 20 years ago- a very beautiful, very independent state!

Thanks again - great help, and a very good website, too.

Anne
